Solution: Reagan-era scandal - NYT Crossword

In the department of arguments against karma, I bring you the Iran-Contra Affair, or IRAN GATE, where nefarious people executed an extremely dirty plot that involved covert military aid to Iran and secretly diverted funds to “anti-Communist” guerrilla forces in Nicaragua, AKA the Contras. It was a bit more complex than that but the upshot was then-President Ronald Reagan repeatedly backtracking on his word and military aide Oliver North getting convicted of obstruction of justice after admitting to attempting to throw Congress off the trail of blood, money and weapons running through three continents. That conviction was overturned, though, and North recently became the president of the National Rifle Association.
