This is my favorite old slang in the puzzle: [Home run, informally] is the delightfully onomatopoeic DINGER. The word DINGER goes back to the 1800s as an indication of something superlative, and it goes all the way back to Old Norse as a representation of the sound of metal being struck. However, its use in baseball lingo seems to be much more recent and might have something to do with Dingerville, a recurring tailgate for the Men’s College World Series in Omaha. It’s populated by trailers and R.V.s, which are pelted by home runs hit by college-regulation aluminum bats — ding! The annual gathering also happens to be named after Dinger, the nickname for longtime attendee, Glenarp Allmendinger.
