Here are two good examples of ingenious clues that flew over my head at first, but became even better later, after some cogitation. 30A, [It’s most beautiful when broken], sounds like an emo song lyric to me, but it’s actually science trivia. It refers to GEODEs, crystal formations that form on the insides of often ordinary-looking rocks. At 37A, [Verb that appears the same when rotated 180°], I was lazily expecting a palindrome, like “sagas,” rather than a word that flips over its center point, like SWIMS.
