Solution: Regulator mechanism, for short - NYT Crossword

Merriam-Webster tells us that a servomechanism, or SERVO, is “an automatic device for controlling large amounts of power by means of very small amounts of power and automatically correcting the performance of a mechanism.” Since the New York Times Crossword does not allow nearly that many characters, 33A tells us that a SERVO is a “Regulator mechanism, for short.” I don’t know what either of those things means, but I will take you at your word, Merriam-Webster/Mr. DiPietro! Let’s face it — servomechanisms are beyond my ken.
