These entries might be groaners when you get them, but I found it really subtle and clever the way their proximity pushed my mind gently down the stream, or river, or some body of water before I figured each out and determined that they actually have something else in common. 1A, “These don’t hold water,” and 11A, “Canal implement,” had me thinking about fishing nets and a lock, or colanders and a berm — anything but the actual answers. 1A solves to anatomical structures on living things that hold fat, despite lore about them: CAMEL HUMPS. 11A alludes to another anatomical structure that’s full of pun opportunities with a hammer, an anvil, a drum and a canal. The implement, used on an ear, is a QTIP.
