Solution: Sports bet - NYT Crossword

This expression comes up all of the time in gambling scenes in the movies, so I’m surprised that it has never appeared in a Times puzzle before. I like this kind of lingo, and I always figured that it had to do with the odds a team had of winning: “what’s the OVER UNDER?” denoting a favorite and an underdog. It actually refers to the total point score of a particular game, and gives you a chance to wager without having to decide who wins or loses — if you think the game is going to have a high score, you take the over; if you think it’s going to be a grind, you take the under. And suddenly I understand what some of my colleagues are talking about when we go into interminable quarterly update meetings (never take the under).
