The digital reference in this clue is to our “upper digits,” which can “handle” the application of PRESS ONS, fake fingernails. Like most things, fingernails have gotten a lot more ambitious in modern times, but the ubiquitous 1980s commercial popped into my head. This pun clue refers to something that exists, at least; at 3D, the clue sends you to 10D, which I think is just hinting that the average human has 10 TOES Down at their feet (“lower digits”). Are there press-on nails for toes? I can’t imagine. My “bachelorette outings” are typically wine tastings, not SPA DAYS (which are not just for bachelorettes, if anyone wants to get these constructors a certificate for a mani-pedi).
