I took a trip to Moab, Utah, many years ago, and stayed with a friend who had rented a house from a family of survivalists, an early version of what we now call “doomsday preppers” — the basement was kitted out for Armageddon with drum-size cans of tuna fish and stacks of canned food. We were all East Coasters who groused at a 30-minute ride in a car, and everything there was 100 miles away, but we got to see some interesting things. I think the features of the landscape in all those parks in the Southwest are totally unique in the world.
