This unusual entry is somewhere in the back of my mind, because I recognized it eventually, but I thought “Do some maintenance on, as a PC’s disk” was “resort,” as in categorize files again, instead of DEFRAG, a way to consolidate files. Several of the clues in this corner confused me: “Where there’s smoke” seemed more like a “clue” instead of a FLUE at first, and I guessed that the “Mother of Apollo and Artemis” was Leda, who bore Castor and Pollux, instead of LETO. (This mythology was exclusively used to clue LETO in the crossword from 1942 until 2002, when “‘My So-Called Life’ actor Jared” first appeared and quickly took over.)
