Solution: 1920 play from which the word "robot" comes - NYT Crossword

I don’t remember where I saw this, but someone recently mentioned online that “R.U.R.,” the 1920 Karel Capek play, was not familiar to them and was therefore unfair as a puzzle entry. I can understand how the name of a play that is more than 100 years old may not ring a bell, but it is well known — at least in crossword solving circles — as the work that introduced the word “robot” to the English language and to science fiction as a whole. With the advent of robotics in the 21st century (don’t even get me started on A.I.), knowing about the play makes for great cocktail party fodder.
