Solution: Teacher of lip-reading to the deaf - NYT Crossword

I love watching people sign to one another; there is a school for the deaf on my daily subway route and I often watch people have lightning-fast, expressive conversations in American Sign Language. I was not in tune to the strong feelings that people have about ASL versus reading lips and speaking, which are skills taught by an ORALIST. Anne Sullivan, Helen Keller’s teacher, was one, and this school of thought was encouraged generations ago by Alexander Graham Bell, among others. Today the key concept seems to be that people be allowed their choice in communicating.
