These two — “Tiny pit in the 55-Across” and “See 44-Across” — sounded fruit-related to me, at first. I got 55-Across, RETINA, on crossing letters. But then I got a little squeamish. 44-Across is the FOVEA, a small depression in the back of the eye that provides our sharpest vision (I think you either have to know your eye anatomy or your Latin very well to get this entry, although FOVEA appears in the New York Times Crossword every so often).
