Solution: Hawkins of "Li'l Abner" - NYT Crossword

SADIE Hawkins, according to the “Li’l Abner” cartoonist and apparently fun guy Al Capp, was the “homeliest girl in the hills,” and grew tired of waiting for men to pursue her, as was the style in those days. In the Nov. 15, 1937 strip, her father, Hekzebiah Hawkins, created the first “SADIE Hawkins Day,” which was “a foot race in which the unmarried gals pursued the town’s bachelors, with matrimony the consequence.” The idea of role reversal became so popular that it became an annual American folk event (because of course it did) where women were given the day to ask out a man, because that was not supposed to happen any other day of the year if they knew what was good for them. I know. It was a different time.
