Solution: Mouse hole - NYT Crossword

I tried every which way to figure out what this entry could possibly be, something punny for “Mouse hole?” as alluded to by the question mark. I turned the letters up, and around, and fiddled around for a few minutes, then turned them back to exactly the arrangement they were in the very first time I tried and, bingo, I had it. It’s a USB PORT, the kind that your computer mouse plugs into, if you’re not using one of those magic bluetooth mouses, or a track pad, or a touch screen. I deal with intractable USB ports daily in my job and I find that by far the quickest way to handle them is to just go for it — you’ll inevitably fail the first time, switch the orientation of the plug, fail a second time, switch and succeed, impossibly, with the first orientation. It’s a paradox we just have to accept until those simple little USB-C slots become universal, which will happen approximately never.
