I’m smitten with this bit of trivia, because you can’t think of CLAUDE MONET without thinking of the paintings of his gardens at Giverny, and I’ve always liked Monet’s bluer paintings and assumed that they were made in the damp days of spring, as opposed to his yellow autumns and hot-colored summers. Many are actually works from late in his life, after cataract surgery involved the removal of the lens of his right eye, which meant that this eye no longer blocked out ultraviolet light waves. This operation might have led to a lot of masterpiece paintings, but it also caused the artist a lot of distress in his later years.
